In 1984 NASA conducted a test of jet fuel additives that were intended to reduce the flash potential of the fuel, the fireball effect inside the cabin is a major contributor to the (sorry for being direct) searing of passenger lungs that makes survivablity very low. The cabin of the airplane was loaded with 90 or so crash dummies.
